L-DOPA exhibits analgesic properties and is a precursor of dopamine. It has also been the gold standard in Parkinson’s disease treatments for over 50 years. It selectively crosses the blood-brain barrier, whereas dopamine cannot. Prevents peripheral synthesis of dopamine from levodopa when co-administered with carbidopa and levodopa in rats.
